IQAC Camp List

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The NSS Unit of AJ Institute of Dental Sciences was formed in 2015 under the NSS unit of RGUHS. The unit comprises of 100 student volunteers and an NSS program officer. The NSS unit has been active in conducting various social activities such as dental treatment and check up camps in association with the department of public health dentistry, blood donation, vanamahotsav week, AIDS day among various other initiatives.

National youth day 2023
The National Youth Day is being celebrated on January 12 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Celebrating this occasion, the NSS unit and Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J. Institute of dental sciences conducted a blood donation drive to create awareness among the youth. The program was inaugurated by Dr K Nillan Shetty, Principal, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences and Dr Arvind, Professor, Department of Pathology, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore. Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Dr Vijaya Hegde, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dr Shubhan Alva, Reader and Dr Roshan Shetty, Reader, Department of Public Health Dentistry were present. More than 100 volunteers representing staff, post graduates and students came forward to donate blood and 61 could successfully donate blood.

International day of yoga-2022
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that helps in maintaining physical and mental well-being. The theme for International Yoga Day 2022 is “YOGA FOR HUMANITY. International yoga day was observed by the NSS unit and Gyan cell, A. J Institute of Dentals Sciences, Mangalore in association with Department of Human consciousness and Yogic Sciences, Mangalore University. A yoga Session was held by Dr. Thirumaleshwara Prasada H for all the student volunteers and staff of the institute. DR K Nillan Shetty, Principal, AJIDS addressed the participants and shared the importance of celebrating this day. A few warm up exercises followed by few yoga poses were demonstrated and performed by the participants. He also taught the different breathing technique.The session was well received by all and greatly appreciated.

TRAINING OF NSS VOLUNTEERS ON HEALTH AND NUTRITION
The NSS Unit, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences carried out the first Training Session on “Health and Nutrition” for the NSS Volunteers on 14-07-2022 at A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences. Dr Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Department of Oral Surgery Welcomed the gathering. Dr K Nillan Shetty, Principal, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences addressed the NSS Volunteers. Dr Tanmayi – Intern –A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences, trained the NSS volunteers on “Health and Nutrition”.

POSTER DISTRIBUTION FOR THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC HEALTH AT URBAN HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE AT KAVOOR ON ANEMIA AND IMMUNIZATION
As a part of the UNICEF supported project on social and behaviour changes on health and nutrition in communities the NSS Unit, of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences handed over the posters on “Anemia and Health”, “Interventions to remove Anemia”, “Importance of Vaccination” and “All about COVID-19 Vaccines” to the Urban Health Training Centre at Kavoor. The posters were distributed in the interest of creating awareness among the public on 21-07-2022.

TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ANGANWADI WORKERS ON “NUTRITION AND ANEMIA” AND POSTERS DISTRIBUTION ON ANEMIA AND IMMUNIZATION
As a part of the UNICEF supported project on social and behaviour changes on health and nutrition in communities, the NSS Unit, of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a Training program for Anganwadi workers on “Nutrition and Anemia” at the Urban Health Training Centre at Kavoor on 27-07-2022. Dr Adithi Shenoy, NSS Volunteer was the Resource Person. Posters on Anemia and Immunization were distributed to the Anganwadi workers in the interest of creating awareness among the public.

QUIZ ON NUTRITION AND ANEMIA
As a part of the UNICEF supported project on social and behaviour changes on health and nutrition in communities, the NSS Unit, of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a Quiz Competition on “Nutrition and Anemia” at A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences on 30-09-2022. There were different rounds organized to challenge the knowledge of the participants on Nutrition and Anema. Tanmayi, NSS Volunteer hosted the event. Team formed by Vajida and Shaman, Interns were the winners.

ORAL CANCER AWARENESS AND SCREENING PROGRAMS
As a part of the World Cancer Day 2022, the Department of Public Health Dentistry in association with NSS Unit, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences, Indian Cancer Society and Department of Community Medicine, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences organized oral Cancer Screening and Awareness Programs at Melkar and Kavoor on 2nd and 4th February 2022 Respectively. A health talk on Prevention of Oral Cancer was given by Dr Pramada, Post Graduate Student. Dr Prithvi and Dr Deeksha, Assistant Professors, Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences were present. Oral Cancer Screening was carried out for the patients. Those requiring further care were referred to A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences.

WORLD CANCER DAY 2022
Department of Public Health Dentistry, NSS Unit and Gyan Cell A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Indian Cancer Society and L & T Technology Services observed World Cancer Day 2022, by conducting a Hair Donation Drive and a Training program for health professionals on Basics of counseling for cancer patients on February 3 rd , 2022 at A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore. Dr K. Nillan Shetty, Principal, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences inaugurated the programme. Ms Alpa Dharamashi counselor and founder of PEHECHAAN and a volunteer at Indian Cancer Society spoke on Cancer – Counseling -Basics and Challenges. Ms Shravya a clinical psychologist, Indian Cancer Society spoke on Psychological challenges in Pediatric Cancer Survivors. Dr Rakesh Mittal – Pediatric Oncologist associated with Indian Cancer Society addressed the Cancer Related queries. Dr Pradeep Senapathi, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences was the Resource Person on the topic “Breaking (Bad) News”. The Hair Donors were felicitated. Dr Vijaya Hegde, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Mr Ranjan – Social Worker – Indian Cancer Society were present .

WOMEN’S DAY AT A.J. INSTITUTE OF DENTAL SCIENCES
Department of Public Health Dentistry in association with NSS Unit and Gyan CDE cell, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences observed Women’s Day on 8th March 2022 at A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences. Dr K Nillan Shetty, Principal, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences inaugurated the programme and addressed the gathering. Awareness program on Breast, Cervical and Oral Cancer was conducted for all the non-teaching faculty of the Institute. Dr Disha Ajila, Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences were the resource persons. On this occasion the Housekeeping staff of the institute were felicitated and appreciated for their services rendered. WORLD HEALTH DAY 2022
World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7thApril to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948.On the Occasion of World Health Day, National Service Scheme, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Department of Public Health Dentistry and Indian Dental Association – Dakshina Kannada Branch conducted an awareness Talk on Prevention of Oral, Breast and Cervical Cancer online for school teachers of Mangalore. The chief guest MrSudakara, Deputy Director of Public Instructions inaugurated the program.Dr K. Nillan Shetty, Principal,Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Dr Vijaya Hegde, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry,DrPrasanna, Treasurer, IDA – DK Branch and DrBharathPrabhu, Secretary, IDA – DK Branch were present. DrAnuradha, AssistantProfessor, Department of Community Medicine, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences addressed the teachers regarding the prevention of breast and cervical cancer. She made the teachers aware about Prevention of Breast Cancer by Self-Breast examination and Prevention of Cervical Cancer. DrVajidaBanu, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciencesspoke about most common cause for oral cancer and ill effects of tobacco. She also spoke about self-examination of oral cavity for early signs of cancer.

International day of yoga
The seventh International Day of Yoga is being celebrated virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that helps in maintaining physical and mental well-being, and over the years. In 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed marking a day as the International Day of Yoga in his address at the UN General Assembly, and the proposal was endorsed by 175 member states, post which the United Nations recognised June 21 as the day to celebrate Yoga. The theme for International Yoga Day 2021 has been decided by the UN to be “Yoga for well-being”. International yoga day was observed by the NSS unit in association with Gyan cell, A. J Institute of Dentals Sciences, Mangalore. A virtual online yoga workshop was held by Mr. Prashanth Pai from Art of living for all the student volunteers and staff of the institute. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS program officer and DR K Nillan Shetty, Principal, AJIDS addressed the participants and shared the importance of celebrating this day. Mr Prashanth Pai gave a brief introduction on the types of Yoga and under his guidance a few warm up exercises followed by few yoga poses were demonstrated and performed by the participants. He also taught the different breathing techniques to help the students and staff in their daily life and also to improve their lung capacity during this period of covid-19 pandemic. He ended the session with brief on mudras and its importance. The session was well received by all and greatly appreciated.

International Women’s DAY 2021
National Service Scheme(NSS) and Gyan CDE cell, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences organized a special programme to commemorate the International Women’s Day on 8th March,2021. Dr. K. Nillan Shetty, Principal inaugurated the programme. Dr. Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Dr. Kiran Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry were present. Dr. Kiran Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences was the speaker for the program on “Mental Health Matters” for the students of the institution. He spoke about stress and its common causes. He also told about ways to manage stress and emphasized the need to be conscious with physiological difference in Women’s health.

Palliative care: Talking about what matters 2021
A visit to the palliative center was organized on 12th February,2021 by National Service Scheme, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Department of Public Health Dentistry and Ave Maria Palliative Care, Mangalore. Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Dr Vijaya Hegde, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry and Dr Lavina Noronha, Director, Ave Maria Palliative Care were present. Dr Lavina Noronha addressed the gathering and spoke about her personal experience in treating terminally ill patients with a few months to live, helping them die in a comforting environment at their own pace naturally. She emphasized on ‘curing is not always possible but healing is’, the hospice philosophy with its person-centered perspective holistic approach. She also explained the patients and families need to prepare emotionally and spiritually for the possibility of death. The program ended with a beautiful musical rendition by NSS volunteers Narma Sabu, Rithika Shetty, Neha Pradeep and a solo violin piece by Shebah Catherine for all the residents of Ave Maria Palliative Care.

Poshan Abhiyaan 2021
The Poshan Abhiyaan was launched in March 2018 by the Prime Minister as the Indian government’s flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers aiming for Holistic Nutrition. This month highlights the importance and role of the right nutrition for the human body. A balanced diet with a combination of essential nutrients and calories is pivotal for the smooth working and growth of the human body. The NSS unit of A.J Institute of dentals sciences, Mangalore had a series of activities throughout the month. A training program “Nutrition and Health” was organised for the volunteers as part of training the volunteers on 9th September, 2021 at A. J Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore. Dr Shilpa Mulki, Physician Diabetologist was the resource person for the program. She addressed the gathering regarding nutrition and its importance. She also told about ill effects of fad diets and how to eat a balanced diet. She told about locally available food that could be added to our normal routine to improve the quality of the nutrients with focus from child to elderly After which Nutritional awareness was conducted for the non-teaching staff of A. J Institute of Dental Sciences. The volunteers also educated the public at PHC and rural centres for the month of September. A total of 230 people were educated in the centres.

WORLD CANCER DAY 2021
On the Occasion of World Cancer Day, National Service Scheme, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Department of Public Health Dentistry and Indian Dental Association – Dakshina Kannada Branch conducted a hair donation campaign, in which 23 participants donated their hair which will be used for cancer patients. Dr K. Nillan Shetty, Principal inaugurated the programme. Dr Shreshtha Shetty, NSS Program Officer, Dr Vijaya Hegde, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dr Prasanna, Treasurer, IDA – DK Branch and Mr Santosh, Proprietor, Fringge Elite Unisex Salon were present. Dr Pradeep Senapathi, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences addressed the gathering regarding the role of Health Professionals in cancer control. He spoke about his personal experience and enlightened the students regarding ways in which they can contribute as health professionals to cancer patients not just for treatment but their overall well-being with emphasis on their psychological needs. A “21 days to Impact Challenge” sharing the ‘I Am and I Will’ commitments as proposed by The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) was also launched at this event. The students will actively participate in the Cancer Control Programme and will upload their activities in social media for 21 days as a part of this challenge.

WORLD HEALTH DAY, 2021
Every year on 7 th April “World Health Day” is observed. To mark this occasion the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences initiated a campaign to conduct a walkathon “Fit RGUHS for fit India”. The NSS unit and Department of Public Health Dentistry, A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore organized for the same in the campus. The NSS program officer Dr Shreshtha Shetty addressed the gathering regarding the initiative and also asked the participants to spread the awareness for vaccination against Covid-19 among friends and family. The enthusiastic staff and interns of the college actively participated in the walkathon.

RASHTRIYA EKTA DIVAS
Rashtriya Ekta Divas was conducted on 31-10-2019 (along with painting and essay competitions on this occasion). Mr Divakar R Shetty, the retired head teacher, Niveditha high school, Kundapur was the speaker at the event, on “the Role of Youth in Nation Building.

SWACHHTA PAKHWADA AT BASAVANAGAR, KAVOOR
During the observance of Swachhta Pakhwada, the following NSS Volunteers visited a village and took up door to door campaign to make the local masses aware about the importance of cleanliness in their surroundings on 08-08-2019.

In the wake of rising number of children initiating tobacco use in Karnataka, RGUHS, Bangalore launched ‘Pledge for Life- Tobaco Free Youth’ campaign in a workshop on tobacco control. The workshop was organized by NSS of RGUHS in collaboration with Sambandh Health Foundation on 27-08-2019.

NSS DAY CELEBRATION
NSS unit of AJIDS conducted a program on the occasion of NSS day in the college on 24-09-2019 Mrs. Prameela Rao, Founder of Kalpa Trust, Mangalore was the guest speaker. She shared her insight on Social Services and MoU was signed.

AB SAMJHAUTA NAHIN “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS"
The ‘Gyan- CDE Cell & NSS of A.J Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore conducted a One day workshop- AB SAMJHAUTA NAHIN “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS” on 29th November 2019 in AJ Institute of dental Sciences Auditorium. A.J Institute of Dental Sciences Principal Dr. K. Nillan Shetty, inaugurated the event. Dr Manjushree Kadam convener Gyan- cell, welcomed and introduced the speaker Miss Anmol Kohli. Dr Rithesh Bangera Asst professor, Dept of Orthodontics introduced the guest speaker. Dr. Apoorva, Member –NSS, Assistant professor Public Health Dentistry delivered the vote of thanks. The program was well attended by over 300 delegates that included staffs and undergraduate students from AJIDS Mangalore.

A Dental treatment camp was organized by Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with NSS unit on 23-09-2018 at Kalladka, Bantwal Taluk. All the patients were screened and treated. Dr Aporva, Program officer, NSS unit was present.

A dental treatment camp was organized by the department of Public Health Dentistry in association with Karnataka Rajya Sarkari Naukarara Sangha and NSS on 7-10-2018 at Belthangady.

TREATMENT CAMP AT URWA
A dental treatment camp was organized by the department of Public Health Dentistry in association with NSS at Sharada Nikethana on 11-10-2018.

ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Organ donation awareness campaign was held in association with NSS unit AJIDS, IMA Mangalore and AMC trust. The NSS volunteers participated in the walkathon which was held on 25-11-18 at Mangala Stadium, Mangalore.

DENTAL TREATMENT CAMP AT GANDIBAGILU
A Dental treatment camp was organized by Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Karnataka State Government Employees Association, Belthangady at Ceon Ashram, Gandibagilu on 06-01-2019. All the patients were screened and treated. Those requiring further treatment were referred to A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences. Dr Shreshtha Shetty – Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry was present.

WORLD CANCER DAY
As an observance of World Cancer Day and to increase the awareness of Oral Cancer, a series of Oral Cancer awareness programs, Oral Cancer Screening and dental treatment camps were conducted on 29th, 30th, 31st of January 2019 at KSRTC Depots, Mangalore and in KSRTC Bus Stand, Bejai on February 4th 2019. The Program was held by Department of Public Health Dentistry and Department of oral pathology, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences in association with NSS. Oral cancer awareness programs, Oral Cancer Screening, dental check-up and Treatment was carried out for the staff of KSRTC and the General Public. Those requiring further care were referred to A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences. A Street play to educate the public on the ill effects of tobacco which was performed by the NSS volunteers of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING AND DENTAL TREATMENT CAMP AT MELKAR
An oral cancer screening program and Dental treatment camp was organized by Department of Public Health Dentistry in association with NSS at Melkar on 06-02-2019. All the patients were screened for oral cancer and Dental check-up and treatment was carried out.

DENTAL TREATMENT CAMP AT VAS LANE
