Often seen as the bridge between medicine and dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.
The scope of the specialty is extensive and includes the diagnosis and management of facial injuries, head and neck cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial disproportion, facial pain, impacted teeth, cysts and tumors of the jaws as well as numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections.
Surgeons may choose to train and specialize in one or more of these specialized fields of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery:
- Surgical treatment for Oral Cancer: the removal of the tumors and subsequent reconstruction, including microvascular free tissue transfer.
- Craniofacial Surgery: correction of craniofacial deformities like cleft lip and palate the correction of congenital or acquired facial deformity primarily to improve Oro-facial function, but also often to overcome facial disfigurement and restore quality of life.
- TMJ Surgery: TMJ Ankylosis Release, Arthrocentesis, Joint Replacement
- Implantology: Pre Prosthetic Surgery For Implant Placement, Immediate Loading, Sinus Lift, Graft for implant placement, Zygomatic Implant, etc.
- Craniofacial Trauma: Treatment of facial soft and hard tissue injuries of the craniofacial structures.
- Cosmetic Surgery: Face Lift, BOTOX and Fillers, LASERS, Hair Transplant ,Fat Grafting
A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences was started in the year 2002. Back then the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery had 60 under graduate students. Post-Graduation course was initiated in the year 2008 with an intake of 2 students. The post graduate seat intake was increased to 6 in the year 2012.
