DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRIC AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

"Children are the most valuable resource, and each smile is precious, hence we strive at making the world a better place, one child's at a time"

Pedodontics is Pais (Greek) means child and dontics is study of tooth. Pedodontics /Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined Speciality that provides both primary and comprehensive, preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.

Robert Bunon (1702- 1748) is known as the father of pediatric dentistry. In 1979 Dr. B.R. Vacher was made the father of Pedodontics in India. Pedodontics was introduced to India in 1950 in Government College Amritsar and in the year 1979 Indian society of Pedodontics and preventive dentistry was formed. The Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry has been formed on the firm belief that "Every child has a fundamental right to his total oral health".

Our concerns are the health of a child as a whole, more specifically the oral health; early diagnosis and prompt treatment; restoring the mouth to good health; to observe and control the necessary developing dentition of the child patient, relief of pain; increase awareness among parents and care-givers; instill a positive attitude and behavior; restore the lost tooth structure and management of patients who are physically, mentally disabled and medically compromised children in an efficient and orderly manner so as to avoid discomfort to the patient and at the same time avoiding any bias towards the special condition of the children.Pedodontist also holds the privilege of being the first person to diagnose the earliest signs of any systemic disorder which are manifested more frequently in a child???s oral cavity as compared to adults.

It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that a dental visit should occur within six months after the presence of the first tooth or by the child's first birthday. The AAPD has said that it is important to establish a comprehensive and accessible ongoing relationship between the dentist and patient ??? referring to this as the patient's "dental home". This is because early oral examination aids in the detection of the early stages of tooth decay. Early detection is essential to maintain oral health, modify aberrant habits, and treat as needed and as simply as possible. Additionally, parents are given a program of preventive home care (brushing/flossing/fluorides) a caries risk assessment, information on finger, thumb, and pacifier habits, advice on preventing injuries to the mouth and teeth of children, diet counselling , and information on growth and development.
